Happy Birthday, Sheds!
October marks the 8th year of Market@theSheds’ existence – and what a ride it has been! 8 incredible years with the best crowd in the world 🙂
Let’s celebrate the good times on Saturday, 1 October, with Champagne and Shades, the best local music, great people and fantastic vibes.
Since 2014, Pretoria’s most colourful market-event has put the artistic and cultural talents of Pretoria at the forefront of entertainment in the city. The market has hosted over 60 events at 012central and has made its mark at various unforgettable occasions. Amongst others, it popped up as “the most popular stage” at the World Choir Games, was part of the official opening of the Javett Art Centre, hosted Pretoria’s Fete de la Musique for 5 years, and partnered with Menlyn, Brooklyn Mall, the historic Old Fire Station, the Pioneer Museum and many other private and corporate events.
This unique monthly event has become a popular feature in the Pretoria landscape, known as a place to experience the local urban culture and its entwined relationship with local art, fashion, food and design. It has also become a popular tourist destination where visitors can enjoy local talent and the unique flavours of Pretoria’s city centre, in a safe, but entertaining and authentic environment.
Because it’s our birthday, this month’s line-up features some favourite, favourites of the market.
We will start the programme with an Open Mic at 12h00, inviting local bands who want a break to strut their stuff on the market stage.
Self-proclaimed African Alien, Thabiso Thabethe will feature at 13h00. This talented man is an inspiration to many, and some would say, the face of Market@theSheds. He blends sounds of acoustic guitar and African soul and jazz instrumentals to produce beautiful melodies we just love.
At 14h00 Dudu Makhoba, vocalist, songwriter and lyricist of note, will entertain with her music style that can be described as refreshing soulful African jazz.
After 4 consecutive hit singles on Radio, a number 1 album debut on Apple Music, and 2 Basadi Music Awards nominations, female pop music force Jamie-Lee Sexton releases her new single later this year and we can’t wait! She will do her thing at 15h00.
Dj Zethu takes the stage at 16h00 and at 17h00, Senzo, popularly known as KWESTA will blow our minds as the main act of the day. This renowned San rapper who has been described as an ‘artistic genius’, bagged 5 SAMA’s in 2017 and is a multi-platinum selling artist. He is also one of the market’s old-time favourites. We just can’t get enough of him and had to invite him to our birthday party! 🙂
Dj Trix is up at 18h00 and at 19h00 Dj Chievosky the 13th takes over to make sure the fun never stops. The market’s resident DJ wears a mask when he performs, but is not to be mistaken with a horror movie character. This soft-spoken gentleman is a force on the dance floor and well-known for his skilful mixing, passion and energetic dance moves that keep the crowds on their feet late into the night.
At the market you can explore a curated selection of fine designer, arts and fashion stalls. Street gourmet food, cocktails, wine and craft drinks will round off a perfect Saturday with friends.
There is FREE and SAFE parking at 216 Sisulu Street which provides direct access to the market. Visitors can also park at the State Theatre, 140m away from the main entrance at 381 Helen Joseph street.
Market@theSheds is the place to start the rediscovery of the Pretoria you thought you knew. It is a project of the Capital Collective, a non-profit organisation promoting city rejuvenation and economic, arts and culture development efforts in Pretoria CBD.
